The Report

January's Run

Weather kept all but the serious scooters nutters at home. Those who came got to ride through the clouds

Brendon Watson

What a miserable day for a ride, hot, wet, windy & humid. Still seven riders turned up with 2 Derbi GP1 250's, a GP1 50, TGB101 50, a Vespa GTS250 with some performance gear, Aprilia Sportcity 250 & an Aprilia SR50. With wet road & recent storms the mountain roads were littered with derbris, it was decided to do a short run up to Lower Beechmont rather than to Binna Burra which would give the riders a short but satisfying twisty ride.

The rain mainly held off with a few showers hitting the riders before they were able to don wet weather gear & many (including myself) were already damp before the run started. One of those times when I decided, nah it won't rain on the way in only to stop at the first set of lights to get drenched, the fact I'd consciously made the decision not to don the gear made it even more uncomfortable considering my wet weather gear was nice & dry under the seat. Oh the irony.

The ride out was pretty straight forward with all riders well grouped & in convoy except for the odd car driver who thought their car would look good wedged in the middle of our scooter convoy. You could see the scooter envy in their eyes as the odd cager would merge into our run.

The run up the mountain was, as always quite twisty. The conditions put all the riders in "cruise mode", leaves & other debri littered the road providing a momentary loss of traction for a few. Nothing scaring, just challenging. Reaching the cafe up the top food & coffee were ordered & many stories told. One regular participant had every spell bound with character building travelling stories.

Best part of the ride was acsending through the clouds, there is nothing quite like feeling the temperature change & your vision slightly reduced as you ride through a cloud, awesome.

The ride back down was a bit less challenging with the roads having dried out a fair bit. The Brisbane based riders peeled off & headed home via the M1 & the gold Coasters peeld off at their repective connecting roads. Unfortunately we have no photo's because my son pinched the batteries out of the recharger for his toy gun.

While a very small run in terms of both distance & numbers it was as always an absolute hoot. Hope to see you on the next one.
