We've ridden it! Bolwell VS125 Sets a new benchmark for the next Generation of budget 125cc scooters. Brendon We were lucky enough to sample Bolwell's latest 125cc offering, the VS 125.
The VS125 is a modern looking scooter and sets a new benchmark for the next Generation of budget 125cc scooters. Technically the VS125 has all the goodies 4 valve four stroke 125cc engine, large twin piston brake caliper with rim mounted disc similar if not the same as the Euro MX150, LED tail light, understeat storage that rivals maxi scooters and very good ergonomics.
The VS 125 is manufactured by SYM with Taiwanese components and assembled in Vietnam. Is that of concern? absolutely not. On first inspection the VS125 shares a few components with other SYM models so we know the components are a known quantity and of good quality. The example we rode is what we refer to as a "Test Mule" these scoots get absolutely flogged by merciless importers evaluating the scoot and dealers like us trying to see what, if anything is going to break.
Despite its life being a very hard one the VS125 showed no signs of abuse, its panel fit and build quality is better than just about everything in the $3,000 price bracket. No rattles or clunks, it has to be that way if you intend to back it with a 4 year warranty.
On the road the VS125 really shows its a generation ahead of the existing players in the $2,990 bracket, the 4 valve 4 stroke engine is smooth and powerful. Accelleration is good and being who we are we just had to take it on the highway where it would sit between 100 and 110, even used the right lane to pass a car.
The suspension package is effective with the twin rear shocks preventing any wallowing in corners, when pressed hard the VS125 is predictable and offers good ground clearance. The large front brake is very effective while the drum rear does a good job of stabilising things. Front suspension is compliant and completes a very sound package.
During the first half of this year we have been sampling new scooters in this price range from numerous importers. The VS125 is light years ahead of everything we have ridden so far in terms of quality, styling, handling and performance. After sampling the VS125 parallels will be drawn against other scooters, the thing about the VS125 is that it is comparable to scooters in higher price brackets like the superb Daelim NS125.
In summary this scooter is being introduced into a market segment that is spoilt for choice, there are so many 125's at or around $2,990 that the new scooterist could easily be confused. The VS125 is a certainty, its a Bolwell so parts backup is good, as is resale, has a 4 year warranty, handling is predictable and performance excellent. If you are looking for a 125 in this price range you must look at the VS125, it makes a lot of sense.
